Web-Based e-Learning Service To Build And Track Online Courses: Nuvvo

Nuvvo is a new, low-cost but high quality, web-based learning management system that offers academics and professional trainers alike a simple-to-use learning portal from which to support the courses they teach.

You can use Nuvvo to set up classes and follow-up with live sessions, evaluate your students through tests and quizzes and create a true online multimedia hub for your classroom.

Nuvvo allows you to incorporate files, links, images, and video to enhance the impact of your lessons and also enables you to generate RSS feeds for your teaching portal.

Nuvvo offers three kinds of subscriptions, starting with a free account that provides 25MB storage for text and files. There are no system requirements and no software to download.

Here are more details:

Nuvvo provides you with your own online learning portal from which you can run as many online courses as you choose. Your portal will have a customized web address of your choosing (customname.learnhub.net).

Once you have opened your account, you are ready to start with the customization of your portal: the main page outlines the "Courses" tab, which will display the summary of the courses, once you have created them.

Click on the "Messages" label in order to create your first course and insert the name and the code of it and enter your course description; the latter will be included in all the course invitation emails you send and in the RSS feed, should anyone subscribe to the Nuvvo Market (the database of all courses created by Nuvvo) or to your course portal feed. Make sure you specify whether you want your course to be advertised or not on Nuvvo's Portal by checking/unchecking the little box.

Click on the "Create New Course" button to submit data: a new page will load, displaying you the course's code and the name of enrolled students. Click on the course's code to set it up and you will see a new page giving you the overview on your course.

The new navigation menu that now appears on the left enables you to edit your course. By clicking on the "Set up" link you can easily modify the description and title of the course (basically, all the info you filled in when you created the course ). On the same page you can also visualize the last fourteen days of course activity.

By clicking on the "Curriculum" link, you can create the content of your course: each individual content page is called a LearnPage. You can create one by simply clicking on the "Create New LearnPage" link and editing the content with the help of a functional WYSIWYG text editor.

In case you want to build tests, quizzes and assignments you need to create an EvalPage (the procedure is the same).

The "Curriculum" page also enables you to create folders, in order to organize your LearnPages and EvalPages. Folders are not required to build and maintain your curriculum as LearnPages and EvalPages can stand alone.

Let's get back to the navigation menu: by clicking on "Participants" you can invite students to join your course in two ways: either by sending an invitation via email or by accepting their request, in case you have listed the course on the Nuvvo Portal (by selecting the "advertise on portal" option from within your course "Setup" tab). You may re-invite students at any time by clicking on the "Re-send Invitation" link.

Click on the "Schedule" link to visualize a calendar and add events to your course. Nuvvo produces an iCal feed, allowing you to integrate your Nuvvo schedule with other calendars like iCal, Mozilla Calendar and Sunbird, CalendarHub and Trumba.

Getting back to the navigation menu, you can point to "Marking Scheme" to create evaluation folders: click on "Create Eval Folder" and add the desired weight for it and create custom marks in the same "Marking Scheme" tab.

The main menu on the left also displays a link to the "Grades" page, where you can report grades for your course.

Through the main navigation menu you can also access the "Messages" page, through which you can get in touch with any enrolled student either by sending them messages or calling them directly via Skype.

The "Blog" page allows you to set up blogs that can be directly added to a content page or evaluation item, or that can reside in their own space. Blogs are useful for encouraging students to discuss directly issues raised during a lesson, thus keeping the course lively and relevant well after the live lecture is over.

A "Payment Report" allows you to to track payments and debts of all the students enrolled.

By clicking on the "My Schedule" label you can see your events for every course you are enrolled in. Events are associated with a specific date and time and are displayed in the calendar. It is possible to have an overview of your messages by clicking on the "Message Center"

It is important that you click on the "Settings" tab in order to insert all information about you, such as your name, alias, time zone and Skype ID.
