Swarming, collective intelligence, digital lifestyle aggregation, ubiquitous conferencing and P2P wireless videoreporting. Are these real by-products of where we are headed or are these still only titles for sci-fi stories?
What does it entail to have an always-on voice channel open with teammates across the globe? How critical a role will video- and audio-over-IP play in the next phase of evolution of these collaboration technologies?
What type of tools and artifacts we really need to effectively collaborate online? Is the whiteboard a real important asset or do we simply need better annotation tools? What are the "core defaults", if any, for an efficient collaboration space? What can you do without?
These, and more, are the key questions that industry thought leaders Ray Ozzie and Howard Rheingold will tackle live, in full video and audio, at the next live Competitive Edge.

Ray Ozzie is the ingenious brain behind Groove, one of the best and most cost-effective online collaboration technologies available today and the father of Lotus Notes. You can imagine how much this man has knowledge and insight to spare. When he is not inventing he is speaking at universities and international conferences and he is often a guest in technology interviews, webcasts and other media events. You can indeed find out a little more personally what Ray Ozzie thinks about conferencing and online collaboration by listening to this recent interview I had with him on the future of online collaboration and Groove, the outstanding full collaboration desktop tool, that he has been refining in the last 5 years. With a multi-million dollar backing from Microsoft, Groove is set not to leave the collaboration stage anytime soon.
Howard Rheingold is the author of SmartMobs, a best-seller book about the impact of new media communication technologies on society and on the emergence of smart collective behaviours by individuals using them. You can find out more about Howard, SmartMobs, the book and the news that make those ideas a reality at the SmartMobs live site. I have personally met Howard here in Rome recently and I did discover him to be a curious, open-minded and an always prompt partner on any topic. Taking him around the city on my "motorino" I had some of the best hours I had had in a long time, because, as you well know, when you can share beauty with someone who can fully appreciate it, it is great joy for both.
But back to the news: The Competitive Edge is a live monthly event organized by me (Robin Good) with the help of Communicast (conferencing service), thinkofit (news and promotion) and Voxwire (recordings).
In each Competitive Edge event I engage two special guests on issues relating to the future of Web conferencing and online collaboration. In the past we have had Jay Cross and David Woolley, and Stuart Henshall with Eugene Eric Kim. This time, with the help of Ray and Howard the focus will be on social issues, changes in work modes, lifestyle and other aspects of new media technologies directly affecting the way we work and communicate with each other.
In the central part of the event, attendees will be able to submit questions to the anyone of the panellists while in the third and final part I deliver a live presentation about key trends, new tools, features, and best practices in user interface design as well as in the marketing of these new technologies.
The event is free and is targeted at conferencing industry experts, reporters, software developers, directors of marketing, product development experts, industry resellers and VARs, entrepreneurs and start-ups entering these industries, researchers and scholars of the sector.
Look forward to see you there!
